Mohandas Gandhi is frequently known as the father of the Indian nation and is often referred to as “Mahatma” meaning Great Soul. He was the most infl uential Indian leader of the movement that freed India from almost 200 years of British rule. His humorous, cheerful, and optimistic manner made him easy to like, although his tactics were often diffi cult to understand. He emphasized human rights and suff ering as the basis of his movement and he consistently taught and modeled nonviolent civil disobedience as the correct path for Indian independence.
