ABSTRACT

Pat Summitt was the head basketball coach for the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers (Vols). She coached at Tennessee since 1974 and recently became one of only two collegiate coaches with over 1,000 victories. Her teams have won more games than any other NCAA basketball coach in history. Summitt was a consummate competitor who won eight NCAA national championships (second only to John Wooden from UCLA who had 10 titles) and 27 Southeastern Conference championships. Her program has produced 19 Olympic athletes and 43 professional players. She was admitted to the Basketball Hall of Fame the fi rst year she was eligible and she was the fi rst women’s basketball coach to break the $1,000,000 salary ceiling. Perhaps most important for her players, every Lady Vol who completed her basketball eligibility at Tennessee has graduated with a degree.
