ABSTRACT

Undoubtedly, the most noticeable contrast between the two countries to emerge from the enquiry is the greater neighbourliness existing on American subdivisions contrasted with the aloofness, if not actual chilliness, which passes for neighbourliness on English estates, both council and private-enterprise. Yet, surprisingly, in both countries there was general agreement that neighbours are best kept at arm’s length: only rarely should you make real friends of your neighbours.
