ABSTRACT

English housewives ‘get to know’ their neighbours and American homemakers ‘get acquainted’ with them. Few English or American families had made friends, i.e. become close friends, with their neighbours through their children for the simple reason that, as we have shown in the last chapter, neighbours are rarely regarded as actual or potential friends. Many, however, had become friendly with their neighbours.
