ABSTRACT

This chapter is in four sections. The first describes the peculiar characteristics of U.K. shopping development and the climate of thought which gave rise to it. The second section looks in outline at the various land use controls themselves and how they have been used in shopping developments. The third describes briefly the historical stages of shopping centre development in Britain and traces the changing use made by developers and local government of the various land use controls. The final section seeks to draw a conclusion as to what e ffect British land use controls have actually had on the shape of shopping centre development.
