ABSTRACT

The Leicestershire, Tyne and Wear and Cheshire County Structure Plans have been selected, partly because they reflect on plans prepared at different times in the past and partly for the variety of retail and commercial environments that are embraced. The London Docklands Strategic Plan is also considered for, whilst this reflects on a smaller scale of planning and is addressed to specific problems of an inner city area, recognition should be given to the scope that exists for strategic planning on specialised subjects outside the conventional administrative units. None of the plans should be viewed as representing either the best or worst of strategic plans; they are extracted here simply to show some variable approaches that have been adopted.
