ABSTRACT

Mr. churchill’s first broadcast, and Mr. Attlee’s reply the following night, were pivotal events in the history of the election. They exercised a profound influence on the subsequent development of the campaign, and perhaps on the final verdict of the electorate. Mr. Churchill launched new issues into the fray. Moreover, he set the tone, which was re-echoed thereafter by most of his followers until polling-day. The tone set by Mr. Attlee and adopted by his supporters in the Labour party was significantly different.
