ABSTRACT

Philosophy is the attempt to formulate and give reasons for general theories about what exists or is real (metaphysics), the nature and extent of knowledge (epistemology), what makes something worth doing or having (value theory), and the difference between correct and incorrect arguments (logic). Memory is implicated in a range of philosophical problems including problems in metaphysics (how much of our identity depends upon our ability to recall our past?), in value theory (do we have a moral obligation to remember atrocities?), and in epistemology (is memory somehow a source of knowledge or is it merely the capacity to store knowledge acquired by other means?).
