ABSTRACT

The last chronological chapter of this thesis ends on a high note. Chapter Six describes how the groundwork was prepared in 1934–5 for Communist intervention in feminist organisations. In the late 1930's, with rapid growth in party membership and an ever widening periphery, the Communist Party was able to implement this policy. This had a two way effect: both greatly increased participation of Communist women in the women's movement and an increased involvement of women in the party itself; they became much less marginal to the organisation as a whole.
