ABSTRACT

The Netherlands boasts one of the most sophisticated markets for responsible investment (RI) in the world. In large part, this can be attributed to the high degree of cooperation between the public and private sectors. While exclusions make up a significant portion of the Dutch RI market, strategies such as engagement and positive selection are increasingly applied. The Netherlands is also home to one of the largest markets for impact investing. This chapter provides an overview of the Dutch market for RI. It is structured in the following way: the next section provides a country overview. This is followed by an explanation of how RI is understood in the Netherlands. The chapter proceeds with an account of RI. The penultimate section draws attention to the Dutch policy and regulatory environment. The chapter concludes with obstacles to the development of the Dutch RI market in the future.
