ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we argue that artifactual literacies as a lens, opens up new worlds for educators; as teachers grapple with the complexities of their students' social worlds we offer the artifactual as an attuned and powerful listening methodology for use in the classroom and beyond (Back, 2007). By making sense of children's material worlds, this process can open up cultural spaces that are rich in opportunities to exchange home ‘funds of knowledge’ with students in ways that are equitable and respectful (Moll, Amanti, Neff, & Gonzalez, 1992).
