ABSTRACT
Lott Cary was born in Virginia about 1780 and worked first as a tobacco packer in a warehouse in Richmond, Virginia. Having taught himself to read, Cary became interested in African mission work in 1815 and played an important part in founding the African Missionary Society in Richmond in that year.
