ABSTRACT
George Washington Williams was born in Pennsylvania of free parents and was of mixed Negro, German, and Welsh ancestry. He received his early education in Pennsylvania and at the age of fourteen enlisted in the Union Army. After the war he attended the Newton Theological Seminary, from which he was graduated in 1874. His first pastorate was the Twelfth Baptist Church of Boston, the oldest Negro religious community in that city.
