ABSTRACT
Emmett Jay Scott was born in Houston, Texas. He received his early education at Wiley University in Marshall, Texas, and at Wilberforce University. Scott’s first job from 1891 to 1894 was that of a journalist on the Houston Daily Post, a white newspaper. From 1894 to 1897 he was editor of the Texas Freeman, a Negro paper.
