ABSTRACT
Alexander Crummell was born in New York City. His father, Boston Crummell, was the son of a Temne chief. Forced to leave an academy in New Hampshire in 1835 because of neighbourhood sentiment against Negroes, Crummell, Henry Highland Garnet, and Thomas S. Sidney entered the Oneida Institute in New York.
