ABSTRACT
Eslanda Cardoza Goode Robeson was born in Washington into a family of considerable intellectual attainments. Her father was an employee of the War Department and her maternal grandfather, Francis Lewis Cardoza, had been the Secretary of State and the Secretary of the Treasury of South Carolina during the reconstruction.
