ABSTRACT
Elijah Muhammad was born Robert Poole, one of twelve children of a Baptist minister on a tenant farm in Sandersville, Georgia. His formal education did not extend beyond the elementary grades. Muhammad worked as a common labourer in the south until 1923, when he migrated to Detroit with his wife and two children.
