ABSTRACT

Having shown the significance of neighbourhood context, we now turn to people’s individual encounters with police officers. Focusing initially on police-initiated contact, we consider the stops, searches and arrests that our London respondents have experienced in the 12 months prior to their interview. We first examine who has which type of contact. We then model associations between (a) the judgements that individuals make about their experiences and (b) their level of trust in the police. Doing all this within a multilevel approach allows us to build on the models presented in Chapter 7. Alongside the main variables of interest – reflecting people’s experience of police-initiated contact – we factor into our analytical model some key socio-demographic factors and some important features of the neighbourhood context.
