ABSTRACT
IT is interesting to note that, whilst literature in Britain on urbanism per se is difficult to find, writings on the neighbourhood are by no means scarce. This tendency for British sociologists to pay attention to the smaller scale face-to-face groupings rather than the larger secondary groups is rather typical of British sociology and a number of reasons for it may be put forward.
