ABSTRACT

FOR a few weeks we heard nothing more of our latevisitors, but immediately the Mohammedan fast ofRamadan was over, hordes of the wretches overran the country, carrying fire and sword. In less than a month not a village existed within a radius of twenty-five miles of our camp, excepting two which were very close to us. The maize crop was either destroyed or carried away, canoes sunk, and the whole of Ulungu turned into a wilderness, except in those districts where the robbers themselves lived. It was not our duty to fight these people, even had we possessed the power; we were only justified in maintaining an attitude of self-defence whilst representatives of the London Missionary Society. Food could only be obtained by making weekly voyages across the lake throughout the dry season.
