ABSTRACT

BESIDES the priest, there are two other persons of whom the Amandebele enquire on such occasions aA the appointment of a successor to the chieftainsllip, who are called ~tmz.i1no and isanusi, the former being the Amakalanga god, and the latter the Amandebele COlljuror. The Umlimo is a man called Ukwali, who lives near a cave in the Amadobohills, alid has succeeded, by his lnany and cunning incantations, in sadly deluding the multitude. If the Amakalanga themselves are asked concerning him, they will say that Umlimo is a man with only one foot, dwelling under one of their mountains in a cave-that he knows all things, is almighty, and very greedy. But if the Amandebele proper be asked to give you a definition of him, they will say that he is a subterranean ghost, known only to the Amakalanga priests. In reality, however, he is no other than one of the original aristocrats of the country, who being well versed in the traditions of his forefathers, the priestcraft and witchcraft of his tribe, mallages to blind the people and hide his true character from them.
