ABSTRACT

OUR people, no,v in part free, and earning a little nloney byextra work, and at extra tirne, were able to contribute for the support of the mission, and it became proper to teach then1 their duty in that respect. We had not required it of then1 during slavery, when they had not even the Lord's day free for the Lord's service, and it ,vas ,vith difficulty they could keep it holy. In their new condition ne,v duties became incumbent 011 then1. So the church-seats ,vere let at a snlall rate to those fit to earn "rages, though still given to the aged and the infirrl1 free.
