ABSTRACT

OUR PURPOSE IN COMPARING the other classes of New Dubliners with the artisans is paradoxical. The major differences that exist between the various classes that make up society are of great interest in themselves and class comparisons are normally directed towards highlighting these differences and understanding the causes which produce them. Our goal is just the opposite. Because ultimately we wish to understand the New Dubliners’ family in general, we are mainly concerned with class differences in order to set them aside in the final analysis and to see the similarities that exist in the family life of all the New Dubliners regardless of class.
