ABSTRACT

THE "Elliptical Temple" is the most famous building in Rhodesia. It owes its celebrity, as well as its name, to the late Mr. Theodore Bent, who explored it in I 89 I, and who describes it in his Ruined Cities of Mashonaland. Since that time several excavators, possessed in general of more zeal than judgment, have cleared it not only of encumbering debris but of many of its characteristic features, so that at the present day, though the visitor can walk freely about every part of it, he will not find it easy to reconstruct an imaginary picture of the interior.
