ABSTRACT

UMTALI, the British frontier town on the border of Portuguese East Africa, has already been mentioned in Chapter I., and I have briefly referred to the existence there of various rough stone ruins. The discovery of these is entirely due to the enthusiasm of my friend Mr. E. M. Andrews, and I am greatly indebted to him for so kindly allowing me to publish in this volume the first record of his most interesting excavations. They deserve to be more fully described than the space at my disposal allows, but as only a small part of the site has yet been touched, there will no doubt be opportunity in the future to write a more detailed account.
