ABSTRACT
IN the last year of his long public life Palmerston declared that “the achievement which I look back to with the greatest and purest pleasure was the forcing the Brazilians to give up their Slave Trade.” In this instance alone his contention that the twin weapons of diplomacy and naval power could suppress the trade was proved conclusively, since abolition came as a direct result of the pressure exerted by the British Navy.(1)
