ABSTRACT
On 4 October 1957 the very first satellite was launched – Sputnik. This was the first human-made satellite and was intended to measure and test the Earth’s atmosphere. It was unmanned. It was launched by Russia and is said to be the start of ‘The Space Age’. World Space Week has been chosen to include this day.
