ABSTRACT

October 31st is the day of ‘All Hallows’ Eve’, usually referred to as ‘Halloween’; in Christian tradition it is the day before ‘All Saints’ Day’, which celebrates the saints – those who’ve made it into heaven! On ‘All Hallows’ Eve’, it is said those souls who have died but not yet made it to heaven – the undead – walk the earth. The festival has become disconnected from its religious roots and operates as an event in which children dress up as ghosts, witches, vampires and assorted ‘supernatural’ characters for fun. The children visit houses in their neighbourhoods hoping to collect gifts of sweets. In America this is called Trick or Treat, an activity that has been imported into Britain in recent times.
