THE origins of the Christian Church in Cumberland are shrouded in obscurity and there is still considerable controversy among historians as to when Christianity first became firmly established in this area. The choice of dates varies from the period of the Roman occupation (St. Ninian) to the sixth and seventh centuries (St. Kentigern and St. Herbert). 1
