ABSTRACT

IN this survey, selective emphasis has been placed on those aspects of the culture which distinguish Gosforth, as a representative parish of rural West Cumberland, from that of the ‘champion’ country, and also from that of the large urban centres. Attention has been given to the farmsteads which is out of proportion to their numerical importance in comparison with the village, because the traditional aspects of community life have survived among farm families to a much greater degree than among village families.
