ABSTRACT

The characteristics of the urban development of the towns of France have been illustrated in Chapter 4 by a somewhat detailed study of three examples, Poitiers, Blois and Laon. The purpose in this chapter is to select five larger French cities and to examine more broadly their present physical and demographic structure in the light of their historical development. Toulouse, Bordeaux, Limoges, Lille and Strasbourg have been selected for this purpose, and the maps upon which the interpretations are based have been prepared in the same way as the preceding maps of the German cities.
