ABSTRACT
The process of urban growth involves the transformation of the historic city, within its ancient walls, in order to meet the modern needs of urban living, while the growth in numbers and movement of people out from the centre to the periphery involve the growth of areas around the historic core. In this study of Brussels we shall pay special attention to this transformation of the historic city since the end of the 18th century.
