ABSTRACT
Genre is a concept that is usually associated with classifying media products into different categories. This process of classification is, however, not necessarily a useful end in itself. To understand the function of genre as a tool to support our reading of media texts, we need to understand how it can help to develop our understanding of these texts and the ways in which they function.
