The Internet as evocative infrastructure

The Internet is often viewed as a material infrastructure facilitating contemporary globalization. Its decentralized and distributed networks of routers, cables, and servers, enabling the unprecedented volume and speed to the circulation of goods, peoples, and ideas, are said to contribute to the transformation of political order from a system of sovereign territorial states to a novel planetary community (Castells 2001, Friedman 2005, Nye 2011, 2004).
