ABSTRACT
One of the founders of ecological theory, C.S. Holling, was instrumental in elucidating concepts that have played a pivotal role in our modern understanding of the functioning of ecological systems and how they are influenced by anthropogenic behavior. Among the concepts developed by Holling are principles of stability and resilience, nonlinearities, thresholds, and tipping points.
