ABSTRACT

On an annual basis, Fortune magazine ranks and announces the list of top performing companies on the basis of several criteria. For example, it publishes a list of the World’s Most Admired Companies. Nestlé, the Dutch famous maker of chocolate and coffee, has been the leading company on the list for every year but one. It is the leading company because it has been able to adapt products to local niches despite its gigantic size. The company empowers its employees to make products that they see as most likely to succeed in local markets. Products like Nescafé were invented for places that lacked refrigeration. Nestlé

also spends a proportionately large percentage of its revenues on research and development. This focus on research has helped the company develop products that tend to be preferred over competitors consistently.
