ABSTRACT

I tried to integrate the strengths of both Western and Eastern management approaches, but without losing the essential qualities of each culture.

—Stan Shih, cofounder and chairman emeritus of Taiwan’s Acer Group, on Acer’s management system1

Entrepreneur Stan Shih grew Taiwan’s Acer Group from nothing to the second largest provider of PCs on the planet. In doing so, he always envisioned Acer as a global brand and as a global corporate citizen. Moreover, his sophisticated understanding of cultural differences is impressive and is captured in his blended management approach, which helped form a new type of Asian management. Visualizing, much less implementing, a style that straddles cultural boundaries effectively is a huge challenge to say the least.2
