International business can be tough going. This chapter reviews all the vagaries and difficulties faced by expatriates. There’s the constant travel, little contact with friends or family, trouble in understanding others, difficulty in getting one’s favorite foods, and even getting used to driving-just to name a few. Adding poor compensation to this list might be just too much to take for many employees. Conversely, being properly compensated for tough overseas duty might be one of the saving graces for this tough job of expatriate.
