ABSTRACT

CHAPTER 2 MADE CLEAR that elections, and the campaigns that precede them, are extremely complex events governed by an increasingly complicated set of laws and regulations. Administering those regulations requires a Herculean effort on the part of the local, state, and federal officials and the thousands of volunteers who run elections in the United States. The first part of this chapter will explore various aspects of election administration, an area of governmental activity that became prominent following the 2000 presidential election. The aspects to be examined include, among others, voter registration and the equipment and operations that enable voters to cast their ballots.
