ABSTRACT

Writing critical essays on film was once vital to me as a cultural critic because I observed that by viewing movies diverse individuals of all races, classes, and genders could and would engage critical thinking. When folks saw a film, especially one that stimulated their imagination, I found them eager to talk about it, eager to share what they liked and disliked. As a feminist thinker I was especially interested in engaging issues of gender. Fundamentally, I knew that films do not just show us the culture we live in as it is but that they also create culture. And that's what I wanted to call attention to: what were films creating when they highlighted issues of race, class, and gender.
