ABSTRACT

Western Australia (1830-1850) IN 1832, when sales were introduced, Swan River was suffering from 'an unavoidable lack of energy and activity'l and this continued during the Wakefield period. It is true that there were signs of progress, as, for instance, when the Trimmers crossed the mountains (1831) and established flocks which in three years amounted to 3545 sheep.2 So also in agriculture, there was an increase by 1834 to 1036 acres, and expansion from the original 'Plain of Quartania' was in full swing.
