ABSTRACT

The development of multinational banks during the 1960s and 1970s may appear to have been smooth and successful, but it is now recognised that the industry faces significant problems in the future. A previous time of crisis occurred in 1974 when the operation of the international money markets was adversely affected by the failure of two banks and losses sustained by others. Since then the markets have thrived, banks’ management skills have improved, and supervisory controls have been strengthened. But recently new problems have arisen.
