ABSTRACT
IN a preceding chapter we have discussed the phenomenon of 'prisonization', the systematic process of adult socialization which takes place in the course of successive periods of exposure to the culture of penal institutions. Two stages were conceptually distinguished; in the first many of the fundamental achievements of socialization in childhood are subjected to serious erosion; in the second new patterns of behaviour are substituted which are essentially prison-specific.
