ABSTRACT

The Shaw Classifying School catered, as we have seen, for girls aged 14, 15 and 16, plus a few who had attained the age of 17 while in a Remand Home awaiting a place, and another small group (not included in the main calculations in this research) who were under 14, and admitted by special permission of the Secretary of State. As we see from the table of age distribution of the 500 sample, almost a quarter were committed between reaching 16 years 6 months and attaining the age of 17.
