ABSTRACT

‘One of our first priorities will be to show that a central bank can be a positive influence in identifying, monitoring and dealing with some, at least, of the economic and financial problems that face a developing country. We recognise that there will be difficulties in this task of delineating for ourselves a role, particularly because, in Papua New Guinea, there has been no prior experience of an independent central bank managing an independent banking system.’ (Extract from an Address by Governor Henry on 1 January 1973 commemorating the establishment of the Bank of Papua New Guinea.)
