ABSTRACT
AMERICAN EXCEPTIONALISM? Every American believes at some level in “American Exceptionalism.” You may not know the phrase, but you know the broad assumptions and the underlying feelings of national pride and confi dence. American exceptionalism is the conviction, embedded in the American psyche from the fi rst generation of colonists, that America is blessed and that God has destined her to play a uniquely positive role in the world.
