ABSTRACT

Virtually all readers of this book will be aware that numerous factors influence the health of populations and could probably come up with a list of some of those factors without too much difficulty. Some important influences would likely get nominated on most readers’ lists – e.g. the extent of poverty, housing quality, access to health services, diet – while other factors would be less widely identified. In this chapter we attempt to bring together the major determinants of population health in two related conceptual models, one highlighting the multi-level nature of determinants, the other their stage in the disease or disability process.
