Exploiting fossil fuels has enabled dramatic improvements in the standard of living for many people. However, burning fossil fuels releases not only carbon dioxide but also pollutants including acidic gases, soot particles and toxic metals. • Air pollution causes serious health and environmental impacts. Even developed countries with advanced pollution control technology are failing to meet air quality targets, and the problems are far worse in rapidly industrialising developing countries.
