ABSTRACT

Many presuppose that the intellectual environment in higher education is antithetical to fraudulent behaviour. Nonetheless, the very structure and culture of colleges and universities, as well as the current constraints under which many institutions operate, can create conditions that facilitate fraud. According to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), 2 fraud is usually committed by educated individuals who are in a position of trust within their organisation. Financial fraud — a deception that causes its victims to suffer economic loss — is not new to higher education, nor does it show any signs of abating in this sector.
