ABSTRACT

Corruption in the academic career 2 can manifest itself in various phases of a professional life cycle, most notably during hiring, promotion and tenure decisions. 3 In corrupt academic systems these processes are influenced by nepotism, cronyism and discrimination — all of which circumvent merit. Whatever its form, corruption and a lack of transparency can drive out good academics, erode the quality of education and research, and chip away at the reputation of higher education institutions.
